Gobelins Pergamon
For the famous hotel Phoenicia Intercontinental – located in a neoclassical marble palace on the Corniche in Beirut, Lebanon – Bierenbroodspot was commissioned to manufacture six large gobelins. However, in 2005, shortly after the completion and installation of the tapestries in the ballroom, tragedy struck and the hotel was hit by a bomb attack. The ballroom containing the brand new gobelins was completely destroyed.
Bierenbroodspot was lucky, she had also commissioned at the weaving mill in Flanders six gobelin tapestries manufactured for herself: not separately as for the hotel in Beirut, but in one enormous gobelin of 9.60 meters wide and 2.20 meters high; an absolutely unique object in the contemporary art world. This impressive textile artwork was the centerpiece in her PERGAMON exhibition in Amsterdam.
